European Seminar in Brussels: what is the stance of the Member States on the European degree?

29/04/2025
Following the work initiated by the European Commission, CDEFI, CRASP, France Universités and EUA are co-organising a seminar on 13 May 2025 in Brussels to discuss the next steps for the European Degree and developments in quality assurance. The event will bring together national representatives, university alliances and European organisations.

In the wake of the Communication on a Blueprint for the European degree presented by the Commission in March 2024, the Polish presidency of the Council of the European Union has tabled a resolution and a recommendation, setting a timeline for the implementation of a European degree label, outlining the next steps towards a joint European degree, and asking Member States to facilitate transnational cooperation through improved quality assurance procedures.

To take stock of national and European positions on this strategic issue, CRASP (Conference of Rectors of Academic Schools in Poland), France Universités, EUA (European University Association) and CDEFI are jointly organising a seminar to be held on tuesday 13 May 2025, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Maison Irène et Frédéric Joliot-Curie (100, rue du Trône, 1050 Brussels). A networking lunch will follow.

Through discussions between representatives of national rectors’ conferences, European university alliances and public institutions, the seminar will seek to address several key questions:
  • What are the expectations of individual member institutions and representative NRC’s?
  • Have areas for improvement already been identified?
  • Are there any red lines raised by some Member States?
  • Are the academic sector and national authorities aligned or not on such subjects (degree and quality assurance in particular
  • How is the implementation timeline and the step-by-step approach perceived across countries?
Confirmed speakers include: Yann-Maël Bideau, Policy Officer, DG EAC in the European Commission, Amanda Crowfoot, Secretary-General of EUA, Prof. Stephan Jolie, Member of HRK-Standing committee on Teaching and Learning and Vice President for Learning and Teaching at Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz, Prof. Arkadiusz Mezyk, former Rector of the Silesian University of Technology and Honorary President of CRASP, Dr. Lucia Palsova, Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra and coordinator of Invest alliance, Sophie Oostelbos, senior policy adviser for international and European affairs at Universities Netherlands and Prof. Sylvie Pommier, coordinator of doctoral education strategy at the French Ministry for Higher Education and Research.

A detailed programme will be communicated soon.
