Campus France reveals the key figures of student mobility

10/03/2020
Campus France has released its annual report on the key figures of student mobility in the world and in France.

There are 5.3 millions of international students around the world (up 71% over 10 years). 20 % of them are from China, which is the first country of origin of these students. Europe is the leading continent for international students.

Among the main host countries, France is the fifth-leading destination for international students, after the USA, the United Kingdom, Australia and now Germany. Indeed, for the first time, Germany welcomed more international students than France.  For outbound students mobility, there is a slight decrease of 2% for France in comparison with 2016-2017. France is the sixth-leading country of origin of students mobility.

The key figures for French engineering schools

In 2018-2019, French engineering schools welcomed 26,216 international students. A third of them is from North Africa and from Middle East, 23% from Africa and Oceania, and 12% from America (against 9% at national level). Campus France shows a disproportionate presence of some nationalities, like Brazilian students (23% of Brazilian students in France were enrolled in engineering schools), students from Malaysia (22%), India (16%), Lebanon (14%) and Mexico (14%).
But French engineering schools are less attractive for students from Europe (15%) and from Sub Saharan Africa (14 %) in comparison with other French higher education institutions.

The distribution per diploma of the 26,216 international students in French engineering schools is:
  • 66% were enrolled in Engineering degrees (equivalent to a Master’s degree)
  • 21% in Licence (Bachelor level), Master or Doctorate diplomas
  • 10% in institution-specific degrees (like MSc)
  • 3% in integrated preparatory programs
The Engineering degree seems to be more attractive for some nationalities, especially for students from Senegal (83% of Senegalese students enrolled in French engineering schools are pursuing an engineering degree), from Brazil (83% as well) and from Benin (82%).
Indian (25%), Ivorian (17%) and Mexican (16%) students make institution-specific degrees their first choice.
